Hiding behind a wall is sometimes all you can do. While embarking on your conquest to the throne, you encounter a huge range of guns, from your boring old revolver, to lightning cannons and toxic crossbows, making the journey an interesting (and explosive) one. However, due to the extremely fast pace of the game, and the requirement of very fast reactions, in the 5 hours I’ve played, I haven’t even got close. In Nuclear Throne you must battle your way through hordes of enemies, ranging from tunnelling maggots to mutant horrors, in order to reach the Nuclear Throne, and slay it. The inherent craziness of it is viewable from the get-go, with characters available named Fish, Steroids and Y.V, and those aren’t even the weirdest. It has an extremely wide colour scheme, from dull, sandy beiges to vibrant, glowing greens, covering the entire spectrum, all while in gorgeous pixel art style, and while its premise is simple – kill everything – you must make tactical decisions, sacrifices, and play how the enemies force you to play, basically changing your style every minute. Nuclear Throne is a game that is almost the exact opposite of the description above. Nothing like the simplicity, dull colour scheme and boring graphics of a good old shooter, huh? Well, Nuclear Throne thinks otherwise. You may find yourself whooping with delight in the first few hours, as you send your regularly abused figure up a loop-de-loop on a swivel chair, there’s not much to do after that. Granted, it’s wacky, but what does adding a different face to your character or being able to ride off in something that resembles an Angry Bird actually do for gameplay? Not much. Good fun.īut when you strip it down to its bare bones, Turbo Dismount is just a plain old physics toy. Half the time you have no idea what’s going on, and you’re just hurtling down a hill in a rush of blue and yellow until you hear the telltale crunch, and then you watch it all over again in slow-motion in cinematic view. The game has a variety of different camera angles to choose from, but first-person is by far the most crazy. The most fun way to play Turbo Dismount is in first-person mode. That being said, it is fun to try and make your character land on their head with the well-implemented steering mechanic that’s hidden behind a couple of editing options, because while destruction is vague, it does feel very meaty and realistic. The physics engine is very well-built, but damage done to your character is very vague, with areas of the body glowing red to indicate casualty, and not much apart from that. In Turbo Dismount, your goal is to send your character (who can be customised to add an image for his/her face, and their body type can be changed) on a crazy crash course up ramps, round roundabouts and down storm drains and do the most damage to the poor little guy. You can only send so many blocky characters up gargantuan ramps in shopping trolleys before the fun wanes, and it all becomes samey. We have a list of frequently asked questions on our wiki page here.Only when you have sent a Miley Cyrus-faced polygonal figure flying off the edge of a cliff into a minefield on the back of a mechanical bird (in first person) will you realize how insanely fun Turbo Dismount is… for a couple of hours.
